ISO 3834

Welding processes are used in various industries. In engineering (vehicles, agricultural equipment, pressure vessels,…), in construction (steel structures, bridges,…) and partly in other industries (eg metallurgy, energy, manufacturing).

The quality of the welding processes cannot be easily verified, therefore, they are considered as special processes, as stated by ISO 9001. A series of standards ISO 3834 does not replace ISO 9001, but it is a tool to use for the welding process. Emphasis is placed on the qualifications of the staff, equipment used, procedures and records of welding.

A series of standards ISO 3834 provides guidance on the establishment and maintenance of a functioning quality management system of fusion welding of metallic materials.

Certification is carried out jointly with ISO 9001 The certified organization shall be entitled to use the certified certification mark. 

Revised standards of ISO 3834-2,3,4: 2021 quality management system for fusion welding of metallic materials

In April 2021 revised ISO 3834-2,3,4:2021 standards were issued, replacing the 2005 standards. QSCert is currently in the process of accreditation for audits according to ISO 9001: 2015 in connection with ISO 3834-2,3,4: 2021, in order to complete this process by 30.06.2022.

Certified organizations should take the following steps:

• Ensure one of the following standards (depending on your certification)
• ISO 3834-2:2021 „Quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials — Part 2: Comprehensive quality requirements”
• ISO 3834-3:2021 „Quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials — Part 3: Standard quality requirements”
• ISO 3834-4:2021 „Quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials — Part 4: Elementary quality requirements”
  • Ensure another necessary standard
  • ISO 3834-5:2021 „Quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials — Part 5: Documents with which it is necessary to conform to claim conformity to the quality requirements of ISO 3834-2, ISO 3834-3 or ISO 3834-4”

Verify the quality management system of fusion welding of metallic materials in terms of partially changed requirements via internal audit:

• Art. 7.2 Welders and welding operators – references to specifications in ISO 3834-5: 2021
• Art. 8.2 NDT personnel – references to specifications in ISO 3834-5: 2021
• Art. 16 – Calibration and validation of measuring, inspection and test equipment – supplemented requirement for ISO 3834-2 (-3): Compliance with the welding procedure specification shall be verified by using validated measuring, inspection and test equipment. Calibration or validation of welding equipment does not relieve the manufacturer from the responsibility of verification of working in accordance with the WPS.
