FSSC 22000

Food safety management system according to FSSC 22000

In 2012, GFSI (The Global Food Safety Initiative) approved the FSSC 22000 scheme as an equivalent alternative to the existing IFS and BRC schemes. GFSI is a global association of retail chains, manufacturers, and service providers in the food industry, bringing together major companies such as METRO GROUP, CARREFOUR, ROYAL AHOLD, DANONE, COCA-COLA, KRAFT FOODS, and others.

FSSC 22000 scheme is based on international standard ISO 22000, which ensures high international acceptance and extension movements of certification on worldwide basis.

According to the FSSC 22000 scheme, the following can be certified:

a) Pre-process handling of plant products, food manufactures, Production of Bio/chemicals – FSSC 22000 scheme (production) consists of: ISO 22000 + ISO/TS 22002-1 + FSSC 22000 additional requirements

b) Production of packaging material – FSSC 22000 scheme (packaging) consists of: ISO 22000 + ISO/TS 22002-4 + FSSC 22000 additional requirements

c) Retail and wholesale with food (supermarkets, hypermarkets, grocery stores, food warehouses, etc.) – FSSC 22000 scheme (retail) consists of: ISO 22000 + BSI/PAS 221 + FSSC 22000 additional requirements

d) Providers of food transportation and warehousing services – the FSSC 22000 (Logistics) scheme consists of the following standards: ISO 22000 + ISO/TS 22002-5:2019 + additional FSSC 22000 requirements

d) Catering services providers – FSSC 22000 scheme (catering) consists of: ISO 22000 + ISO/TS 22002-2 + FSSC 22000 additional requirements

e) Processing of feed and animal food – FSSC 22000 scheme (feed) consists of the following standards: ISO 22000 + ISO/TS 22002-6 + additional FSSC 22000 requirements

Compared to IFS or BRC schemes FSSC 22000 has following advantages:

• Lower fees to scheme owner, which are transferred in the certification price
• Validity of the certificate is 3 years
• Easy implementation for ISO certificates holders (common requirements)
• There are no K.O. requirements
• Compatibility with other ISO standards (e.g. ISO 9001, ISO 14001) and therefore possibility to conduct audits together
• Higher international acceptance – international network of national accreditation bodies is used for certification bodies accreditation

A certified organization is authorized to use the FSSC logo.
